Cultivating Healthy Habits
“The purpose of education is pushing out into the world young citizens who are soaked in habits of thoughtfulness and reflectiveness, joy, and commitment.” -T. Sizer
When my son was going through his elementary and high school years, I too wanted him to be in the habit of being grateful, considerate, and reliable. I most certainly wanted him to do well in his academics, but I needed to know he was becoming a more compassionate young man. I knew then, as I firmly believe now, that it takes a strong partnership between the school and families to ensure we are cultivating habits of kindness and excellence in our students.
To that end, we will be providing our District families access to resources that we believe will assist in some of those areas throughout the year. In the sections below, we highlight a couple of the resources (SmartSocial and our new messaging system) we are excited to share with you immediately!
District Updates
SmartSocial. Many of our students have a cellphone, tablet, or even gaming systems with Internet access and social media. While advances in technology have many great rewards, there is also the potential for harm. We are excited to announce that the Salem School District has partnered with SmartSocial.com for its on-demand courses for families and students.

Messaging System. Today’s message was delivered via Salem’s new communication system. Salem School District has partnered with Apptegy for messaging and communications. Apptegy’s tools integrate well with Salem’s new school website and mobile app. This Falcon Friday Focus was simultaneously delivered to email, Salem’s website, and our new mobile application.
In the coming weeks, you may also receive a text alert from School. The initial text message will include a short welcome and legal verbiage regarding "message & data rates may apply". There will also be instructions for opting out of the SMS text notifications. We encourage families to continue receiving these text messages as they will keep you informed regarding important events. Text messaging also helps us reach families in the event of emergencies and inclement weather school closures.
Detours & Road Construction. Over the next several weeks, road construction north of the school on Highway 83 will make it a little more difficult to get to school. Below are recommended routes for getting to school when you approach Salem School from the north.
